After graduating from Bates College in 2012 with a degree in economics, he purchased a Condo at Waterplace in downtown Providence and over the next 10 years flipped 10 downtown units. With a growing resume of impressive high-rise unit renovations, he became a licensed Realtor® in 2020 and completed his first home flip on Providence’s East Side in 2022. Derek prides himself on mastering all facets of his work, from modern design to tastefully preserved historic character.
Flipping for real estate
Though a young professional, Derek has been a student of real estate for decades. Born and raised in Lincoln, he embraced home design from a young age. Sunday open houses and architecture magazines gave him a rich vocabulary of industry knowledge, but it didn’t stop there. “When I was on the cross country team at Moses Brown, my runs through the neighborhood eventually morphed into historic home tours,” Simpson added. “I dreamed about one day living in a historic East Side home, and now I do! I love the easy walkability, the shops and restaurants, plus the incredible historic architecture, and I’ve been told this comes through in my work. My role is to help clients see the potential in a property, whether it's a simple addition of wallpaper or a complete floor plan redesign.”
Derek’s detail-oriented style made him gravitate to a brokerage with strong leadership that holds high standards for professionalism. High-rise aspirations
As he begins planning out the remainder of 2023 and the start of 2024, Derek is focused on expanding his network into his East Side neighborhood. Though he’s a resident of Providence, he has also transacted in Portsmouth and is a tremendous advocate for The Ocean State. “Rhode Island offers a variety of atmospheres, everything from a bustling downtown cityscape to world-class beaches and nature preserves,” Simpson noted. “In RI, we have the benefit of being so close to major metropolitan areas without feeling too congested. You can live in Providence and feel worlds away from your beach house in Narragansett.”
Expertise meets ambition as Derek further refines the scope and breadth of his personal brand. “I would love to become the go-to guy for all things high-rise condo in the state,” Simpson said. “I want my clients to use my passion and experience to their advantage and consider me an honest, hands-on resource. This goes for my fellow agents and colleagues as well. Building trust is the key to a successful relationship, and my goal is to create a client portfolio of friends and colleagues that look to me as their go-to real estate professional.”
