RPL’s DeRentis Records Highest Providence Sale Ever

Residential Properties Ltd. proudly announces the sale of 66 Power Street on Providence’s East Side for $5.5 million. RPL Sales Associate Jim DeRentis represented both the seller and the buyer in this transaction.

According to State-Wide MLS data, this is the highest Providence sale ever recorded. RPL has now participated in 72 of the 77 single-family home sales of $1 million or more in Providence this year, with DeRenits accounting for 24 of those sales.

I am honored and privileged to have been able to represent the sale of this significant property – one that holds such a strong place in American history and in the founding or our capital city, state, and nation,” DeRentis said. This is the first time this home was offered for sale outside of the family since it was built in 1803. It is comforting to know that this property will be in the hands of a strong steward that will preserve and protect it for years to come.

Built from 1803 to 1805, the Thomas Poynton Ives House is one of the most exquisite homes of the Early Republican period of architecture in Providence. Set on two acres in College Hill, this three-story, brick structure with a hip roof surrounded by a low balustrade was built by Caleb Ormsbee, a Providence master builder for Ives, a wealthy merchant. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, today the home is an enduring monument to Adamesque-Federal style. The single-story circular porch with Ionic columns leads to the main doorway topped by an elliptical fanlight. The 10-foot-wide center hall with Adamesque woodwork showcases a main staircase spiraling upward in a pleasing flourish. The library was designed by Leon Marcott & Co of New York for Mrs. Moses Ives in the 1870s, when an oval west wall was added and the room was finished in black walnut. A private smoking room at the back allows for intimate conversation, while multiple sets of French doors off the library step out to the stunning rear terrace and grounds. The cobblestone motor court leads to the carriage house with an upstairs in-law apartment offering an eat-in kitchen, living area, and bedroom for a unique finish to this grand estate. The ideal location steps away from historic Benefit, Wickenden, and Thayer Streets allows for a variety of shopping and dining. The campuses of Brown University and RISD and the Providence train station are all in walkable proximity.
