Built from 1803 to 1805, the Thomas Poynton Ives House is one of the most exquisite homes of the Early Republican period of architecture in Providence. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, today the home is an enduring monument to Adamesque-Federal style. The 10-foot-wide center hall with Adamesque woodwork showcases a main staircase spiraling upward in a pleasing flourish. The library was designed by Leon Marcott & Co of New York for Mrs. Moses Ives in the 1870s, when an oval west wall was added and the room was finished in black walnut.
