Three Rhode Island schools are making news for their excellence in education. Archie R. Cole Middle School in East Greenwich, Francis J. Varieur Elementary School in Pawtucket, and Nayatt School in Barrington were each honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015. In all, a total of just 335 schools across the entire country earned this prestigious award in 2015, with only 8,000 schools receiving the honor in its 33-year history. The Blue Ribbon Award is the highest honor the U.S. Department of Education can award a school making it among the best in the nation. The Department of Education chooses the schools based on overall academic excellence and their progress in closing achievement gaps. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on student scores and graduation rates.
