Winter storm Nemo left more than 187,000 Rhode Islanders without power last weekend after high winds and heavy snow bombarded the state. Severe storms like Nemo often catch people off-guard, it is a good idea to have an emergency winter kit. Chances are you probably have most of the things you might need in your home already, with a little organization you can have an actual survival kit and a plan in place for when nature strikes. Here are some suggestions from the FEMA website:
- Food that doesn't require heating or refrigeration, such as canned meats, soups, cereal, and energy bars, Manual can opener
- Paper plates, cups and plastic utensils
- 1 gallon of water per person per day (allow enough for four days)
- Flashlights and batteries
- Battery-powered radio, Battery-powered clock, Cell phone
- First-aid kit, Four-day supply of prescription medicines
- Blanket and cold-weather clothing for each family member
- Pet food and additional water for household pets
