You may be aware that the Cumberland American won the New England Little League Championship in Bristol, Connecticut this weekend and will be heading to the Little League World Series. The RPL Cumberland Office is especially excited about their success. This team of extremely talented young athletes are representing Cumberland well, embodying a spirit and determination that makes us proud to be members of their community. Heart is what makes this team stand out. After starting the New England Championship game 3 runs behind, the Cumberland American showed discipline beyond their years, rallying to beat their Andover, Massachusetts counterparts 12-7.
After this Saturday win, the team headed to Williamsport, PA to await their Friday game against the winner from the West region—Ocean View, a group from Huntington Beach, California. “The boys are just thrilled to be there” according to our client, Janice Peluso, whose grandson is on the team. “They see this as a fairytale, a dream come true.” And the parents are just as excited. After a pancake breakfast provided by Navigant Credit Union, this supportive group will be escorted out of Rhode Island by 4 police departments as they caravan down to Pennsylvania for Friday’s game. All of the Cumberland American parents will attend to show their support. Rhode Island has been represented in the Little League World Series five times since the organizations founding in 1947. The last group to make it to this level was also from Northern RI, a Lincoln team in 2004. While it may “feel like Christmas” to the team, this opportunity is reflective of the dedication and hard work they’ve displayed over the season, and is definitely well deserved. Congratulations to “Our Boys of Summer” and Good Luck!
