If you are a regular listener to the show, you know we are strong proponents of sustainable design and building practices. No longer a fad of the Eco-chic, nor just "greenwashing", nearly 25% of all new construction projects in the U.S. are LEED-registered, and the number of states with green building policies and programs increased from 13 to 31 between 2005 and 2008. Buyers are also beginning to understand the value of green homes. A recent study by the Earth Advantage Institute showed energy efficient certified homes in the Portland Oregon metro area sold for 3%-to-5% more than non-certified homes, and were on the market for 18 fewer days. And to show that sustainability doesn't have to be ugly, this week we spoke with Elisa Fosse and Laura Reveruzzi, of Ecoluxe Studios. They are both LEED accredited professionals and their Mission is to bring sustainability into their client's homes and businesses by combining great design with sustainable elements. This Week's Real Estate Insight: Make sure you have a Realtor who understands the value of sustainable design and knows how to market it properly. People will pay more for a home with sustainable features just like they pay a premium for hybrid cars. The economic benefits of energy efficient systems appeal to everyone and particularly to investors looking to increase cash flow. Idealists will gladly pay a premium to do their part in protecting the planet, and there are always the trend suckers for whom "Green is the new Black."
