There’s something about the crisp autumn air that brings us back to simpler times. From the colorful leaves to the cool evenings, something about the fall begs us to engage in centuries old New England traditions, like apple picking. Although the grocery store boasts a plethora of apple varieties, there is great charm in going to an orchard and choosing them yourself. Luckily, there are several farms around the state with apples ripe for the taking.
If you live in the West Bay, Narrow Lane Farm in North Kingstown is a great place to pick apples and peaches. There is also a 1.1-mile nature trail with old stone walls, a fish pond where you can feed the fish, and educational plant facts that are perfect for a school field trip. If you live in the East Bay, you can pick your own apples, peaches and pumpkins at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown. Along with fresh pre-picked produce and farm grown flowers, Sweet Berry Farm also has food and concert events and a thriving Art on the Farm program which showcases local artists. For those of you in Northern RI, Phantom Farms in Cumberland is a great place to pick apples and pumpkins. They also have several fun events planned in the near future such as the Apple Harvest Festival (September 25-26) and the Antique Tractor, Truck & Motor Show (October 2-3). Best of all, after you visit Phantom Farms you can stop by the Residential Properties Cumberland Office, located right down the street.
