Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition

It looks as though we may get another iconic bridge over the Providence River.  Could we get a structure as striking as the Millennium Bridge over the RiverThames in London? Hopefully, something even better! On Friday, Mayor David N. Cicilline and  Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Michael P. Lewis announced Providence’s Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition and asked local firms to help shape the city’s landscape. This new bridge will connect Fox Point and College Hill to downtown and the emerging Knowledge District, and will make commuting between these areas much easier for pedestrians and cyclists.
A continuation of the highway relocation project, this new pedestrian bridge will be constructed at the site of the old I-195 highway. The Selection committee will gather up to 10 finalists to submit their bridge designs. Both traditional and creative bridge designs are welcome. The goal of this new addition to the waterfront is to not only make Providence more convenient, but also more beautiful.
