The 28th annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off will be held this Saturday, June 6th, 2009 from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center on America's Cup Avenue in Newport. The cook-off lets you be the judge and taste all you can eat samples of chowder, 3,000 gallons in total. Entrants have traveled from as far as Washington State, California and Bermuda and also include local favorites Smokehouse Cafe and The Mooring. The top 3 winners in each category receive both bragging rights and prize money. The categories are: "Best Clam," "Best Seafood," and "Best Creative". There is also the "Clam Shack" clam cake competition. The event will include 3 music stages, a marketplace with crafts and specialty items, a silent auction, and many "kidSTOPs" throughout the festival with face painting and other activities. Schwepps will provide free ginger ale, Barefoot Wines will have an offering of wines and there will also be an Amstel Light Beer Garden. McAuley House artists will exhibit their work with an opportunity to buy. Proceeds will go to McAuley House in its mission to provide basic needs to the most vulnerable in our community. Admission costs just $20 clams. Children under 12 are FREE with an Adult. See you there!Chowdafest this Saturday!
