Yard Sign/Open House Sign - 15% According to a 2008 NAR survey comparing data from 2001 through 2008, the sources above are the top 3 sources used by buyers surveyed to find the home they purchased in 2008. While the Internet steadily increased in popularity from 8% in 2001 to 32% in 2008, yard signs and open house signs remained unaffected by the Internet's popularity, consistently ranking between 14% and 16% between 2001-2008. NAR also studied the information sources used in a home search. In 2008, 62% of buyers named yard signs among the information sources used in their home search. According to this same study, 47% used print newspaper advertisements and 30% used a home book or magazine. 87% identified the Internet among the sources used during their search and real estate agents were used by 85% of the buyers surveyed. Did you know that the famous "Hollywood Sign" was originally an outdoor real estate advertisement, erected by the Hollywoodland Real Estate Group? You might not be able to expect such a lasting impact from a yard sign, but if you are debating about whether to place a "For Sale" sign on your property, keep in mind that signs are effective. 62% of buyers look to yard and open house signs as they conduct their home search and 15% of sales have been tracked to signage.
