Indian Rock
The Reverend William Babcock House “Indian Rock” (ca. 1880-90). At the turn of the century, Narragansett rivaled Newport for being one of the most desirable summer destinations for America’s wealthy elite. Along the southwestern coastline of Rhode Island, where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, are situated some of the loveliest historic Victorian shingled summer “cottages”. The stunning view of the Atlantic surf unfurling along the commanding granite coast is enhanced by the historic architecture and timelessness of a bygone era. Indian Rock, for which the residence is named, is the famed picturesque boulder jutting toward the sea and can be viewed from almost every room of this wonderful house. This granite outcropping which turns pink to gold with the light has been painted by many landscape artists including William Stanley Haseltine (1835-1900) and William T. Bricher (1837-1908).
LOCATION: The property is located on Hazard Avenue, a small street off of Ocean Road which leads directly to the Atlantic Ocean. The nearest large city is Providence which is thirty miles north. Driving time to Boston is less than two hours, and to New York three hours. The nearest airport is Greene Airport which is a twenty minute drive and the nearest train is Amtrak in Kingston, only fifteen miles away.
PROPERTY: The property consists of three and one half acres with almost four hundred feet of ocean frontage. It is a double lot consisting of several garden areas with mature plantings, private hedges, ornamental trees, fenced perennial gardens, fenced organic kitchen garden with its own irrigation system, and an expansive rolling lawn to the ocean. An invisible fence for pets lines the entire perimeter of the property.
RESIDENCE: This 5,363 square foot residence has been in the same family since the 1920’s. It is a two and one half story building with gabled dormers and an ell in the rear. The first floor consists of a formal entryway, double living room with fireplace, exquisite oceanfront three sided window seat, formal dining room with Wedgewood marble fireplace and bay window, enclosed oceanfront veranda and open porch. There is also a coat room, powder room, kitchen with family room, and laundry room on the first floor. The protected patio in the rear of the house extends off from the kitchen and living rooms. The second floor consists of a master bedroom suite with fireplace, his-and-her bathrooms, and dressing room. There are four additional bedrooms and one bathroom on this level, all with beautiful views, including one with an ocean view porch. In between the first and second floor, privately situated, is a guest suite with bathroom. The third floor contains a playroom with two additional bedrooms, bathroom and cedar closet. The attached two-car garage has extra storage and an unfurnished second floor living space.
CARRIAGE HOUSE: Built in the early 1900’s, originally as stables, this carriage house now consists of a wonderful artist’s studio on the first level with an office in the rear and additional garden storage. On the second level is a two bedroom apartment facing the ocean.
