Rhode Islanders seem to have a special place in their hearts for doughnuts, right next to pizza strips and Del’s Frozen Lemonade. In fact, it has been proven that Providence has the most doughnut shops per capita in the nation: 25.3 shops per 100,000 people. Of course, every Rhode Islander has their own favorite doughnut shop and doughnut. Listed below are five popular choices for satisfying a sweet tooth in the Ocean State.

The legacy of Allie’s Donuts began on June 1, 1968 when Frederick “Allie” Briggs opened up shop. Since then, it has remained family-owned, and is currently operated by Allie’s daughter Anne and her husband. The shop is known for its heavily sprinkled doughnuts and creative doughnut cakes; Thrillist has even named the bakery second-best in “The 33 Best Donut Shops in America.”

4 Corners Coffee is no misnomer, as it boasts square-shaped doughnuts with flavors including: cotton candy, Nutella, double chocolate, espresso, and maple bacon with maple flavored frosting and pieces of bacon. Its popularity is such that the shop is often sold out before lunch. According to the Warwick Post, “[w]ithin the first 11 days, the business sold 11,000 doughnuts.”

Located in Downtown Providence, Knead Doughnuts offers a selection of old fashioned, cake, brioche, and filled doughnuts. One example of their seasonal offerings includes a brioche “Friendsgiving” doughnut, which came topped with topped with fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and a cranberry glaze, and was featured in Cosmopolitan, Refinery 29, and Thrillist. According to its website, due to its popularity this shop has tripled its staff and turns out 2,000 doughnuts a day.

Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, Ma’s Donuts and More makes more than 42 kinds of donuts, 15 pastries, 9 bagels, 10 muffins, malassadas, sweetbread, sandwiches, soups, and seasonal options and weekly specials daily. Founded in May of 1993, Ma’s Donuts is owned by Valdemar and Palmira Leite. A particular specialty is the croissant-doughnut hybrid that comes in Boston cream, honey dipped, cookies and cream, raspberry cream cheese and sugar.
