Halloween

Rhode Island is one of the best places in the country to celebrate Halloween. The history — both normal and paranormal — perfectly accents the eeriness of the month, while the changing leaves cover everything in those idyllic shades of red, orange, brown, and yellow. The shorter days may mean the coming of winter soon, but for now, we can all bask in how they help to highlight the jack-o-lanterns and give us hours of darkness to explore haunted locations.

If you are looking for that ideal location to visit this Halloween season, here is a list of just a few places and ideas that only make our little state that much better:

Ghost Tours perfectly show off both sides of history in Newport and Providence, two of the state’s and country’s oldest and most historic places. If you prefer something more physical and in your face with your haunted house then Rhode Island has many to choose from. Field of Screams, Factory of Terror, and Fortress of Nightmares are just some of the haunted attractions in the area. There are even some that don’t begin with the letter F. All offer a variety of sordid and frightening paths filled with monsters and horrors around every corner.

Haunted Hayrides

In addition to their haunted house, Field of Screams, as well as Scary Acres and Seven Cedars Farm, offer haunted hayrides that whisk you away into the night where anyone or anything could come out of the fields and onto your cart. Scary Acres along with a few other farms provide haunted, nighttime corn mazes giving you even more of a challenge than simply navigating your way through the stalks.

Rhode Island is the perfect destination for Halloween. The local history and weather create the ideal conditions to enjoy a true Halloween. The question is how best to get the full experience of the holiday. Here are five things you can do to make the most of your Halloween in Rhode Island, creating a perfect mix of horror, history, and pageantry for all ages.

 

1. Roger William’s Jack O Lantern Spectacular

The Jack O Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo is a great experience for people of all ages. The atmosphere is perfect for fall with the lights of the pumpkins just about the only thing illuminating the path. Every year new themes are presented giving you a range of new artwork. It’s perfect for a date night or hanging with friends and family. Relax and take a stroll like it’s an outdoor museum. Don’t rush and take in all the amazing work that people have done. The attraction is open from October 5th until November 5th.

2. Escobar’s Farm

Escobar’s Farm in Portsmouth, RI has everything you need for a complete Halloween. A large highlight is the themed corn maze that has a different shape every year. Past years have included Rhode Island Comic Con, the P-Bruins, and local landmarks. The farm also features hayrides, and a concession stand along with other themed activities. It is a great day outside for adults and kids while they attempt to solve the corn maze.

3. The Haunted Labyrinth

The Haunted Labyrinth is a haunted attraction that has been running for over 30 years in Cranston. They change the theme every year keeping it fresh. The lines generally move quickly. If things get too scary while inside, every room has a curtain where volunteers can lead you back out of the maze while the rest of the party continues on. If your child is the one that leaves a special pass is given to parents, so rest at ease while your heart rate spikes.

4. Field of Screams

Field of Screams is a fun outdoor haunted attraction in West Greenwich. Offering a fright in the fresh air, Field of Screams’ attractions include a fun and scary trip through a haunted house, a haunted hayride, and a haunted maze. Their newest attraction is zombie paintball where you can test out how ready you are for the zombie invasion as you blast the undead with a paintball gun. This is a fun way to breathe in some fresh air while screaming all of it back out.

5. Ghost Tour in Providence or Newport

There are ghost tours in both Providence and Newport where workers lead you around the historical districts showing off some of the oldest and most haunted places in Rhode Island and America. You will hear ghost stories and even if you don’t get a scare you get a tour of some beautiful historic neighborhoods in both cities.
