Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has announced the list of 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools, naming three local Rhode Island schools as recipients of the award, including Barrington Middle School, Fort Barton Elementary School (Tiverton), and Stephen Olney School (North Providence).
“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education—that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” exclaimed Secretary Duncan.
In all, 337 schools (287 public and 50 private) from across 47 states were named to the distinguished list based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Secretary Duncan labeled this collection of schools as “a national treasure” and went on to urge them to share their secrets of success with other schools “to become engines of educational innovation, galvanizing others to transform their schools as well.”
Both Barrington Middle School and Fort Barton School garnered their awards in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools, while the Stephen Olney School was recognized in the category of Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools.
Barrington Middle School was one of just 25 middle schools in the entire country to earn the honor, as well as one of only two from the New England region.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Ceremony will be held on November 10-11 in Washington, D.C. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts,” said Secretary Duncan. “We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.”
