Block Island is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 12 miles from the mainland of Washington County, Rhode Island and is accessible by ferry. Settled in 1661, Block Island is a three-­by-seven mile island with 17 miles of shoreline that is open to the public. Block Island has been praised by Coastal Living in their 2012 issue for being one of the “21 Best Beach Vacations in the United States.”  

The island offers many attractions with more than 50 shops and restaurants and plenty of outdoor activities. Residents and visitors of all ages can enjoy both land and sea with activities ranging from biking and hiking to sailing, kayaking and snorkeling. Visitors can also get in touch with local wildlife by bird­watching, horseback riding and fishing.

Although popular as a beach retreat, Block Island has a rich history which can be seen through its homes and architecture. Farmhouses, lighthouses and hotels are preserved and can be viewed by residents and visitors. Most historical homes that remain are traditional “sparse but durable” built to withstand island weather. However, architectural styles such as Gothic, Medieval and Shingle can also be seen around the island.

The Nature Conservancy has named Block Island “One of the 12 Last Great Places in the Western Hemisphere” making the island not only a desirable location to live, but also to rent or own vacation property. The Mohegan Bluffs provide majestic vistas of the island’s beautifully jagged shore, as well as Montauk Point on the horizon. The island maintains two historic lighthouses; the Southeast Lighthouse on the bluffs and its sister beacon, the restored North Light.

The only town on the island is New Shoreham.

Transportation Info

Daily ferry service is available between the island and Point Judith. Ferries also sail from New London, Connecticut and Montauk, New York. Block Island also has a small airport with both scheduled flights and a charter service.
